Transformation at ING (C)
"Around the same time that ING Netherlands started its Agile transformation, the company also began an overhaul of its corporate culture. Ralph Hamers, who became CEO of ING Group in late 2013, noted that although its new strategy had provided a better understanding of ING’s purpose and direction, company culture remained an open question. And while most people had an intuitive understanding of ING’s values and norms and what was expected of them, it was impossible to hold employees accountable to these without explicit standards. Thus, in summer 2014, a team from corporate headquarters was given the assignment of researching and laying out a set of principles—later named the “Orange Code”—that would fit with the company’s purpose, and then rolling it out company-wide. The team consisted of seven people from Human Resources (HR), Branding, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and Communications, and reported to the Global Heads of HR and Brand Management. They also were advised by an eight-person “project board” that consisted of a mix of country CEOs as well as the Global Heads of Innovation, Compliance, CSR, HR, and Branding."
