John Edgar Wideman sings of "dead children in garbage cans, of caterpillars consumed like canapes, of a young girl pushed to paralysis down the steps of a stairwell, of the slaughterhouse and blindness and rape, of drugs and prison nd Vietmam, of gospel and basketball, of lost gods and dead fathers".
