Beyond Communities of Practice

Synopsis
In these studies, linguists and educational researchers examine the concept of "communities of practice," developing aspects of the concept previously unexplored. The contributors use theories of language-in-use, literary practices and discourse to illuminate the relevance of conflict, power and social context to communities of practice. The studies reflect research conducted in schools, police stations, adult basic education, higher education and multilingual settings. They assess the relationship between communities of practice and theories based in literary studies, critical language studies, the ethnography of communication and sociological theories of risk.
