Everyone deserves the opportunity to read. According to World Health Organization estimates, 285 million people are visually impaired, 90% of whom live in developing countries. An even greater number of people have learning and physical disabilities that make reading difficult. These barriers to reading prevent people with disabilities from pursuing education, getting work, and enjoying books.

Bookshare® is an ebook library that makes reading easier. People with disabilities can read books in audio, braille, and other accessible formats and customize their experience in ways that work for them. Through partnerships with publishers and the support of volunteers, Bookshare offers the world’s largest collection of ebooks in accessible formats. Membership is free for people with qualifying disabilities.

Bookshare is an initiative of Benetech, a non-governmental organization that empowers communities with software for social good. Since 2001, Bookshare has helped people with disabilities to read in ways that work for them. Today, Bookshare serves hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities in over 70 countries.
